Mournful Mutation, 2016- 18" x 25" image on 21" x 30" rag paper, reduction woodblock and monotype print
Stem, 2016, explores and comments on the human condition through the repressed internalization of emotion and conflict. Through reduction woodblock printing, I illustrate the emotional and physical effects that stem from dealing with the complexities of anxiety, repressed emotion, post traumatic stress, and depression. I draw this exploration from the experiences seen in or shared by friends and family as well as my personal inability to verbally communicate these struggles.
Flowers are prominent in this series for emphasis through their historical symbolism and meaning. The distorted figures in my work represent the strenuous physical effects of emotional conflict. The juxtaposition of these two elements draws a parallel to resilience and fragility and the confrontation this presents within the self.
Stem takes the abstract idea of emotion and makes it concrete; illustrating what is sometimes impossible to verbally convey. With this series I seek to bring awareness to the very real weight of emotional disorders and the unhealthy effect that repressed emotion has on the body, heart, mind, and soul.
